Lets Bring $$$ Back To America

Unemployment lines.  Millions of American jobs shipped overseas. Decaying cities. Families in homeless shelters.

Politicians and pundits squawk about these problems. Bruce Springsteen just released his rockin’ Wrecking Ball, an impassioned album about America’s hard times (see The Boss’s music video below).

You and I as hydroponics growers…we’re filling the pot of gold in America’s #1 homegrown industry: hydroponics medical marijuana.

People wanting to see a Born In the USA economic boom have only to look at what medical marijuana growers, patients, dispensaries, hydroponics retailers, distributors, and hydroponics manufacturers have created. Our hydroponics community shows its patriotism by producing connoisseur homegrown medicine, and big money for the economy.

Hydroponics’ economic benefits are amplified when you use American-made hydroponics nutrients, says Michael Straumietis, CEO and co-founder of Seattle-based hydroponics manufacturer Advanced Nutrients.

Straumietis’s hydroponics company has employees and facilities worldwide, but he says Advanced Nutrients “makes it a priority” to create more American hydroponics jobs.

“We started a hydroponics ‘Buy American’ campaign,” Straumietis reports. “We encourage growers to go for American-made hydroponics products, even if they’re made by our competitors.”

What’s Best for Hydroponics Marijuana & America

For most companies, profits are the only consideration. That’s why American corporations close U.S. factories and ship jobs offshore to countries where wages are drastically lower and there are few if any environmental regulations.

Advanced Nutrients has the opposite approach, Straumietis says.

“We could off-shore almost everything and make more money like other companies do,” Straumietis says. “But when hydroponics manufacturers make money by taking jobs away from Americans, that’s bad for growers and America.”

Loss of American manufacturing jobs starts a downward spiral that bankrupts families and communities, Straumietis explains. When an American factory closes and jobs go overseas, laid-off American workers can’t afford their house payments. Property values sink. Businesses fold up. Local government loses tax revenues. Schools are shuttered. Once-thriving communities become ghost towns.

It doesn’t have to be that way, Straumietis asserts, explaining that Advanced Nutrients was founded near Vancouver, Canada but the company’s innovative hydroponics products soon became so popular that Advanced had to open manufacturing and distribution centers in the U.S.

“We could have chosen our U.S. locations based solely on logistics, labor cost, taxes and other standard criteria,” Straumietis says. “But what we cared about as much as anything was finding where we could do the most good for American workers and local economies.”

Straumietis decided to locate the company’s primary U.S. manufacturing center in Woodland, Washington, even though it meant extra training costs and logistical expenditures.

“All our nutrients distributed in America are made by Americans, in America,” Straumietis says. “We’ve got employees at Woodland and across the U.S. Our manufacturing, sales and distribution facilities produce millions of dollars in payroll, taxes and other revenues for local U.S. economies and our products grow millions of dollars in revenues for hydroponics retailers, cultivators, suppliers and allied businesses.”

Keeping Hydroponics Jobs in the USA

Today Advanced Nutrients is one of the most valued employers in Woodland, says a mother of two children married to a US-based Advanced Nutrients employee.

“The region’s unemployment rate is well above the national average, and job creation has fallen off a cliff. A lot of small towns like ours try to get private prisons to move in, but the money they bring doesn’t pay for the crime and social problems they bring,” she says.  ”On the other hand, a company like Advanced Nutrients is just what we needed. They treat my husband and everyone so well. Advanced is a morale builder for us here. They’ve kept our family and our town alive.”

Straumietis applauds other companies that also manufacture their nutrients in the U.S., including Age Old Organics, Aurora, Botanicare, Dr. Earth, Dyna-Gro, Earth-Juice, Emerald, Fox Farm, Humboldt Nutrients, General Hydroponics, and Vital-Earth.

But it’s unlikely those companies intensely double down on Buy American business practices the way Advanced Nutrients has. Straumietis says his company voluntarily insists on the highest standards and practices to ensure worker safety, quality control, and environmentally-friendly manufacturing.

“We source from local suppliers whenever we can,” Straumietis explains. “When our people travel, we only put them on U.S.-based carriers. We’re one of the only hydroponics companies to provide health insurance and wellness incentives. We provide jobs for Ph.D. scientists, factory workers, transport specialists, administrators, chemists, quality control experts and many others.”

Straumietis says his company’s American employees feel extra loyalty, gratitude and dedication because Advanced Nutrients chose to locate its manufacturing in the USA.

For you as a hydroponics grower, this means Advanced employees are making better products for your plants.

“Their job is customer satisfaction,” Straumietis says. “They’re committed to making our products absolutely consistent, fresh and effective for growers.”

Buying American Makes You, Your Country and Your Plants Healthier

Other than your patriotism and loyalty to fellow Americans, what other good reasons make hydroponics medical marijuana growers lend support to the Advanced Nutrients Buy American campaign?

Straumietis quotes the familiar saying: “A rising tide raises all boats.”

“We’re all in this together,” he emphasizes. “When hydroponics growers spend money that supports American companies, families and communities, they strengthen the market for what growers grow. It improves our standard of living. It makes our country stronger and happier.”

Straumietis says growers gain hydroponics “Buy American” benefits in their grow rooms because hydroponics products manufactured in the USA are more potent and have longer shelf life than nutrients made overseas and shipped to America.

“Advanced Nutrients combines U.S.-manufacturing with premium materials, scientific research and dedication to grower satisfaction,” Straumietis says. “When you use our All-American nutrients, your gardening is easier and more profitable…and you help America stay strong.”

Growing Marijuana Indoors – An Overview

Growing plants hydroponically means that you grow the plants in an inert and sterile growing medium rather than in soil. With hydroponics, you can easily control nutrient uptake and grow medium oxygen content according to the plants need. If you are planning to grow medical marijuana indoor, hydroponic would be a right choice for you.

To grow medical hydroponic marijuana indoor you need to select your grow room carefully. Usually, a good place to set up your hydroponic grow room is in the basement. Since it is naturally insulated by the foundation, temperature management would be easier for you. Constant air circulation and fresh air is very much necessary for your indoor system. For that you need to install an oscillating fan. When using fans keep the fan in constant motion and not blowing directly on the plants as this can cause wind burn and dehydration. The larger your cannabis grow room is the greater your water demands. Make sure you have adequate and convenient access to water. If you are not using clones to start your garden, you need to germinate seeds by using rockwool cubes.

The size of your cannabis grow room will determine your light set up. Metal Halide (MH) or High Pressure Sodium (HPS) are generally used. Metal halide light is close to any regular room light and cool fluorescent light is best for vegetative growth period. Small growers can use portable lights and adjust according to the needs. During the vegetative stage, keep the light on for minimum 18 hours a day. For clones and seedlings you need T-5 high-output fluorescent lighting. Grow room humidity during vegetative phase should be between 40-55 percent. You should avoid excess humidity that allows mold and other harmful organisms to flourish, which can destroy your plants. Growing medical marijuana indoor requires a large amount of oxygen. They also need large amounts of carbon dioxide (C02), especially underneath leaves. Total C02 for the grow room should be between 800-1200 parts per million during lights-on cycle. Plant foods are usually measured in an N-P-K format, i.e. nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. If you are buying hydroponic nutrient from market, get the powder kind that mixes with water smoothly. An all purpose hydroponic nutrient solution with secondary elements like calcium, sulphur and magnesium, and trace elements such as boron, copper, molybdenum, zinc, iron, and manganese will get you through all stages of growth. Remember to change the nutrient solution in every 2 weeks to clean out the reservoir. After cleaning, you need to add tap water and nutrient solution properly to reuse it.

Marijuana plants produce a unique odor that you may occasionally smell, usually at dusk and dawn. Sometimes they can be strong enough to attract attention. To eliminate the smell, you need to install an ozone generator. If you are planning to store your weed for more than a year, you have to wrap them in an air tight container and store in dark, cool place.

History of Marijuana

Marijuana History

Marijuana History

Marijuana, also known as cannabis possesses immense health benefits and has been used as an effective medicine for thousands of years. Throughout the world, various ancient cultures such as Chinese, Greek, Arab, Indian and Native American have relied on cannabis for its medicinal benefits.

The earliest known material identified as marijuana was found in an ancient burial site from the Chou Dynasty of early China. Archaeological data reveals that cannabis was first used in Chinese medicine around 3000 B.C. Evidences of medical marijuana have also been found in Egyptian archaeological remains dated as early as the 16th century BC.

Marijuana is considered as an excellent medicine for reducing nausea that is associated with various medical condition and treatments including chronic pain and swelling. Cannabis reduces intraocular pressure by 30% for patients suffering from glaucoma.

Marijuana was first introduced into the modern world by William Brook O’Shaughnessy, an Irish physician and herbalist of British India. He was the person who experimented with marijuana and wrote the first modern English medical marijuana history. After his findings, medical marijuana became a useful ingredient in many pharmaceutical products in western hemisphere. After the development of medicines for the treatment of pain, the use of marijuana was dropped and thereafter banned by the federal government in 1937.

In 1970, doctors started experimenting on medical marijuana again and found that marijuana caused a significant reduction in intraocular pressure within the eye. Between 1970 and 1980, the health departments of several states started experimenting with marijuana. Finally, in 1996,for the first time California approved marijuana for treating cancer, AIDS, chronic pain and other illnesses. In 1997, The Office of National Drug Control Policy commissioned the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to conduct a comprehensive study on the medical efficacy of cannabis.

The IOM report recognized that marijuana and its constituents possessed numerous therapeutic properties, including the ability to control pain, nausea, and anxiety. They urged the government to make it available for patients and researchers too for further study. Immediately following the IOM’s report in 1999, the White House promised to support independent research on medical marijuana.

In 2001, the regulation on accessing marijuana for medical purpose was first established by Health Canada. They defined two categories of patients who are eligible for access to medical marijuana. First category covers any symptoms associated with the physical ailments like severe pain, multiple sclerosis, and weight loss, severe nausea from cancer or HIV/AIDS infection, arthritis, and epilepsy. Second category is for applicants who have any devastating medical symptom, other than the conditions described in first category.

In 2003, the US Health and Human Service Department applied for the patent of medical marijuana cannabis and received the government approval of the same. They filed a patent application for the use of cannabinoids, the active ingredient unique to marijuana and have been used as antioxidants and neuroprotectants. Government found the cannabinoids effective at treating ischemic, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, neurological problems like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. So far, the United States of America has legalized the use of medical marijuana for 15 states and the District of Columbia followed by Washington DC and today, 60% of Americans support legalizing marijuana for medical use.
